During Audi Victoria Week in Australia, held from 19 - 24 January 2010, Geoff Floyd won the multihull class aboard his Corsair SPRINT 750, "Chilli".
Below, Geoff tells us what happened.
Audi Victoria Week is one of the most popular regattas in the Southern Hemisphere. It is sailed on the waters of Corio bay and Port Phillip Bay over 6 days (see Google Map). Consisting of 2 races on Tuesday (19 January), a passage race to Melbourne on Wednesday (20 Jan), 2 races on Port Phillip Bay on Thursday (21 Jan), Friday (22 Jan) was a rest day and Saturday (23 Jan) was the passage race back to Geelong along with 450 other keel boats. We then had 2 more races on Sunday (24 Jan).
We sailed the regatta with a crew of 4: Delian, Laurie, Lisa (co owner) and myself which gave us a slit rating advantage over the other Sprint (OMR) as well as an extra pair of hands.
The wind for the week varied from light and fluky to 25 to 30 knots on the nose for the 35nm passage from Melbourne. I think 4 crew also made a difference in these conditions as we left boats like a Melges 30 in our wake.
The other thing in our favour was a new Quantum carbon teknora fusion M mainsail that went up the day of the first race and looked great through the full wind range.
We sailed against 13 other multihull boats including one other Sprint which we managed to keep behind us in most races. Other boats in the fleet consisted of a couple of F82's, four F31's and some larger cats.
The racing was close all week. We found that crew position on the boat was critical both in & out and fore & aft. On the last day we had our best two races beating some of the 31’s over the line and finishing with a 1st and 2nd to give us a two point win.
The end result was a bit of a surprise for us. When we were packing the boat up after the last race, Delian looked up the results on his phone and we were in second place. This turned out to be a furphy! It wasn’t until the presentation later that night at the pub that we got the good news that we had won.
And yes, we did celebrate!
